Tree Arbutus menziesii Pacific Strawberry Tree, Pacific Madrone
Description The Madrone / Madrona is an attractive evergreen tree with smooth russet orange sinuous trunks, with peeling bark and thick green leathery leaves. Originally from the Pacific Northwest coastal and Mountain areas of the North American continent, it is native to Canada and Western coastal states of USA, including California. It produces white urn-shaped flowers born in upright clusters in spring followed by red to orange smooth round fruits. While the fruits are edible when ripe, that are considered unpalatable and astringent.

Uses This tree is bird-attracting, particularly when in flower or fruiting. Very suitable for residential properties and as a feature tree in parks and open spaces. The fruit can be used for ciders or preserves.
Position & Soil Has moderate frost tolerance and high drought tolerance once established. Prefers some frost protection in early years. Grows well on elevated and rocky areas. Grows best in well-drained soils. Full sun position.
